Bonaire, Dutch West Antilles

As I write you this very instant, I am sitting at a table on the beach next to a little cabana bar, toes in the sand, looking out onto the majestic waters surrounding Bonaire in the ABC islands at sunset. Today has been the second sign-out day of the last nineteen and we have all been celebrating the peak Carnival here on the island this afternoon. Tomorrow night they’re having the burning of the Momo, which symbolizes the end of the two week Carnival and the beginning of Lent. Or something like that. I may have the days wrong, Ive heard different things. Anyhow, I’ve had some beers in the sunshine and a few of the others are laughing at the table next to me, and it is a nice indulgence after the last journey. We’ve had some great passages and some mildly rough seas that sent most people doubled up by the gunnels booting over the rail. Underway making way, the accommodations are less than luxurious, but certainly far better than they used to have it. It gets awfully hot when we cannot open the hatches and the waves are pounding. Here in Bonaire, 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Bridger and I were walking back from the downtown parade and festivities (very soon after we had gotten there) planning just to go to the boat, maybe get ahead on our papers, when we saw some of the staff crammed in a little van passing by. “We should hitchhike!” Bridger said. Ok I said and threw out my thumb, the immediate next car stopped picked us up and brought us here to the beach on the north side of the marina. They kept raving about how amazing the diving is around the whole island - apparently you can just walk off the beach to some of the best reefs in the world - and we’re convinced. On our free time tomorrow were going diving. Thats it. It just so happened that the captain and staff were here sitting at the next table over and fully endorsed our plan for tomorrow afternoon and evening. I might get a night dive in which would be good, because I am now working towards my advanced open water certification. It has all been very good and nonstop. Packed in busy days for sure.
